Clean & Efficient Laundry

Compact spaces require clever design solutions. Upon remodeling this lovely 700 sq. ft. cottage, we discovered the washer and dryer were located in the garage, separate from the home. We decided to relocate them to the main house. Wanting to maintain as much of the original layout of the home as possible, we created the perfect niche for laundry right at the end of the kitchen. Using one of our favorites, the stacked Miele washer and dryer are scaled down from the exterior, with the interior made in the same cubic feet as standard-size machines. Add shelves above for storage with doors to conceal the space when not in use, and our Client has a functional and pretty laundry cabinet.

Keeping Wellness in Design as our main focus, we are providing our favorite tips & tricks for a long-lasting, non-toxic, laundry experience.

Clean Laundry Tips:

  • We like to opt for non-toxic laundry pods/detergents. They are easy to find and typically won’t contain the same toxic fragrances and chemicals as most do.

  • Wool dryer balls take the lead in place of the very toxic dryer sheets. For static, we like to toss about 4 of them in each load and don’t let the clothes over-dry.

  • We throw in a 1/2 cup of baking soda with each load to help brighten colors and enhance detergent performance.

  • Pour 2-3 drops of lavender (or your preferred) essential oil onto the wool dryer balls for a fresh scent out the dryer.

Long-lasting Laundry Tips:

  • Always read your fabric care labels!

  • Wash your sheets & delicates on cold and gentle cycles only.

  • Air dry natural fibers, knitwear, and denim.

  • Sort your clothing, towels, bedding properly before washing.

  • The best stain remover is baking soda, white vinegar, and a bit of baking soda with an unused toothbrush! Scrub, scrub, scrub, and let soak for 1-2 hours depending on stain type.

How to Clean Your Washer:

  • For front loading washers, leave the door open after each load for about 15 minutes to air dry.

  • Ensure that you watch for mold growth along the interior edge. If you find mold, some hydrogen peroxide on a microfiber towel will clean it right off.

  • Run a clean cycle every 2-3 months with 2 cups baking soda and 2 cups distilled white vinegar on a hot cycle.

We hope you enjoy these tips! Stay tuned for more. . .
